ESP: Therapeutic Recreation
ESP utilizes Recreational Therapy everyday. From improving range of motion during sports to improving social and life skills at a Braves game or even breaking out of your shell and doing something new during Flag. Each activity planned at ESP has a purpose. Recreational therapy may look like plain fun activities but in reality it is fun with a purpose.
What exactly is Therapeutic Recreation?
Recreational Therapy provides treatment, education and purposeful recreation activities with measurable goals and objectives to individuals who want to improve their overall quality of life.
Whether you are referring to it as Therapeutic Recreation, TR or Recreational Therapy, it is all the same. TR is the purposeful use of recreation and interventions to improve function in the 6 domains: Social, Emotional, Physical, Cognitive, Leisure and Spiritual. Recreational Therapist’s assist clients to develop knowledge, skills and abilities for daily living and overall improvement of quality of life.
Recreation therapy focuses on inclusion, not exclusion, by allowing the individual to participate in and be an essential part of activities they enjoy and learn from.
Recreation therapy is specifically designed to allow participants to partake in leisure pursuits by helping them overcome barriers by eliminating the roadblocks that impede the pursuit of sports, arts, crafts, games and other life-enhancing activities.
*Just like ESP, TR focuses on the individual’s abilities not their disabilities.*
Who can utilize Therapeutic Recreation?
Anyone and everyone who wants to improve their overall quality of life can utilize TR.
