A First-Time Camper’s Story: ESP Atlanta and the Power of Buddy Support
ESP summers carry a special kind of magic—field trips, camp songs, and activities carefully designed so every member, volunteer, and staff member feels alive with possibility. This year, Desmond Joseph experienced that magic for the first time at ESP Summer Camp in Atlanta, and he is officially a big fan. His favorite moments? The zoo…and anything involving water!
At every ESP event, each participant is paired with a dedicated buddy—someone to share the joy, offer support, and make every moment accessible. Desmond’s mom, Mary, said his buddy was “engaged, attentive, and a wonderful part of his camp experience.” And coming from Mary—the organized parent who keeps a whole spreadsheet of trusted resources for fellow caregivers—that’s high praise. This year, ESP officially made the list!
ESP has become part of the Joseph family’s rhythm throughout the year. Monthly family dinners are now a staple. “We always feel welcomed,” said Desmond’s father, Mirgill. “ESP is like a family, and you can see that everyone is rooting for Desmond.”

And it’s true—we are rooting for Desmond, and for every person who walks through our doors. Creating transformative experiences is what we live for. These moments are made possible thanks to generous donors who give their time, talent, and resources.
